Abdumalik Abdullojonov reportedly detained in Ukraine

Ex-Prime Minister of Tajikistan Abdumalik Abdullojonov has reportedly been detained in Ukraine.

The BBC’s Tajik Service reports Abdumalik Abdullojonov was detained after arriving at Kiev’s Borisopol airport from the United States.

The cause and details of the arrest of Abdumalik Abdullojonov have not yet been specified.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor-General’s Office of Tajikistan neither confirmed nor denied this information.  An official source at the Prosecutor-General’s Office just noted that Abdullojonov had been put on the list of internationally wanted persons for coup attempt.

Abdumalik Abdullojonov (born January 1, 1949) is a Tajikistani politician.  He served as the Prime Minister of Tajikistan from September 21, 1992 to December 18, 1993.  He resigned as Prime Minister to become Tajikistan's first ambassador to Russia.  In 1994, Abdumalik Abdullojonov ran against Emomali Rahmon for the office of president and was defeated.  After that he left Tajikistan and since that, he has been living in the West.  According to Tajik law enforcement authorities, Abdullojonov allegedly funded Colonel Mahmoud Khudoiberdiev’s unsuccessful riot in northern Tajikistan in 1998.  Abdumalik Abdullojonov has lived in Los Angeles in recent years.

Abdullojonov put himself on the map last November and Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service posted his interview on its website.  Some local experts attributed appearance of Abdullojonov to the upcoming presidential election in Tajikistan.
