Astana and the EU Intend to Intensify Bilateral Cooperation on the Eve of Kazakhstan Presidency in OSCE

The Ambassador of Kazakhstan, the Head of the Mission of the Republic to the EU and NATO Erik Utembayev met the Secretary General of the European Union Javier Solana in Brussels.

“During the meeting they discussed main issues of bilateral cooperation, particularly of the Presidency of Kazakhstan in OSCE in 2010, world financial crisis, international security, nuclear sphere problems”, - specifies the published press-release of the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan.

“Considering the Presidency of Kazakhstan in OSCE in 2010 our country intends to use at maximum the dialogue in the format of the EU-OSCE on most urgent issues of modern international relations”, - said E. Utembayev during that meeting, according to the press-release.

The two Parties exchanged their views on priorities of Kazakhstan activity within OSCE, specifying also the importance of the development of strict plan of cooperation with the European Union and its institutions.

The press-release points that in order to activate political interaction between Kazakhstan and the EU, the Parties expressed a common opinion on extension of legal framework of bilateral cooperation, intensification of the work within a Council for cooperation Kazakhstan – the EU, including the issue of advanced partnership.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the context of promotion economic interests and establishment of close relations between business communities of Kazakhstan and the EU, J. Solana expressed interest to the offer to organize a permanent mechanism of negotiations – business group (Council).

“J. Solana noted the consistent and growing role of Kazakhstan in Central Asia region in solution of actual international problems. He underlined the importance of Kazakhstan as a prospect Chair of OSCE and pointed that the European Union as a main part of this Organization, welcomes the promotion of dialogue with Kazakhstan in all spheres”, - stated in the press-release.
