Azeri Deputy Speaker calls for increased Russian role in Karabakh settlement

Azerbaijani Parliament Deputy Speaker called for increased Russian role in the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in Baku on Saturday.

As the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing country and a legal successor of the former Soviet Union, Russia should be involved more closely in the conflict settlement, Ziyafat Asgarov was quoted by media as saying.

"I think that the role of Russia as the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing country and a legal successor of the former Soviet Union should increase. It must increase because the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was left as a legacy of the Soviet Union.

“The Soviet Union created this problem. But Russia is its successor. So, it has a big responsibility in peaceful resolution of this conflict," the Azeri deputy speaker said.

The statement came in aftermath of the official visit to Azerbaijan by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Asgarov said that Medvedev once again voiced Russia's position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in Baku. But the Russian President spoke only about the moral obligations, he added.

Azeri official expressed hope that the statements made by the Russian President in Baku “will be followed by their practical implementation”.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy 20 percent of the neighboring country’s territory despite four UN resolutions on their unconditional pullout passed earlier. Russia co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process, along with the United States and France.\
