Dmitry Salamatin: Ukraine will contribute to the creation of safe Afghanistan

 Today in Brussels, chaired by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, was held the meeting of the North Atlantic Council with countries - contributors to the operation of the International Security Assistance Force in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. This is reported in the press service of the Defense Ministry, for UNN.

 

During the event, was discussed the current progress of the transition period, the form of cooperation between the countries - contributors in Afghanistan beyond the transition period, and the format of the NATO-led mission after 2014.

 

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in his opening speech noted the progress, achieved through the joint efforts of the International Security Assistance Force and the Afghan government. He said the unity of the Alliance's intention to continue to support the Afghan government after the transition and transfer of responsibility for security in the country.

Defense Minister Dmitry Salamatin during his speech stressed the importance of joint efforts in the development of "safe" Afghanistan.

 

"This I learned personally during a visit to Afghanistan in September. Ukraine is consistent and continue to participate in operations in Afghanistan, - said Dmitry Salamatin. - Our nation is interested to participate in the international effort in Afghanistan after 2014", - he said .

 

Defense Minister expressed his gratitude to the Lithuanian, Polish, American and Afghan soldiers, side by side with whom work Ukrainians.

 

Ukraine is now actively involved in the planning of a new NATO-led mission in the format "28+6", that will certainly contribute to the development of optimal political and military decisions for the long term.
