Legal Foundation Is Laid For Activities Of The Lithuania-Georgia Commission For Co-Operation

On 18 May in Vilnius, Lithuanian and Georgian Ministers of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and Grigol Vashadze signed regulations of the Lithuania-Georgia Commission for the European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and, thus, paved the way for activities of the Commission.

The establishment of the Commission is outlined in the Lithuania-Georgia Charter on the European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, which was signed on 28 April last year. The Commission will be responsible for the political dialogue between Lithuania and Georgia, consultations and cooperation in the political, economic, military, scientific, cultural and other fields.

“Signing of the Commission’s regulations testifies to the fact that we are really institutionalizing our cooperation and moving towards specific projects,” Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said during the ceremony.

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy once again called attention of the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, who came on a three-day official visit to Lithuania, to Lithuania’s support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and its goals of Euro-Atlantic integration.

According to A.Ažubalis, relations between the countries are exemplary and Georgia occupies a special place in Lithuania’s foreign policy. At the same time, the Minister stressed that there were possibilities for the countries to develop their economic cooperation.

During the meeting, the EU-Georgia cooperation was discussed. Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the perspectives that were opening up for Georgia in its relations with the EU: the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative that was presented last year, possibilities to conclude an Association Agreement and to facilitate visa regime.

“Please do not take it as mere political politeness that Georgia’s representatives frequently visit Lithuania for pieces of advice. For example, we ask your advice on such an important thing as the Association Agreement, because negotiations on the Agreement will start soon. You have come a long way long ago and knowledge and experience that you have gained are very important to us,” G.Vashadze said after the meeting.

The Ministers also discussed the situation in the South Caucasus region, and other important issues of international policy.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister is holding meetings with Speaker of the Seimas (Parliament) Irena Degutienė, representatives from the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Committee on National Security and Defence of the Seimas. On Thursday, meetings of Georgia’s Foreign Minister and Lithuania’s Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and Minister of National Defence Minister Rasa Juknevičienė are scheduled.

This is already the third visit of G.Vashadze to Lithuania since his appointment as Georgia’s Foreign Minister in December 2008.
