The prolongation of the stay of Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea can result into the issue of the status of a peninsula. This was stated by a former Head of President’s Secretariat (PS) Viktor Baloga, commenting on the agreement stipulating the locating of the Black Fleet in Crimea till 2042.

“We shouldn't claim Russian authorities. Russia works to develop its buffer areas. Within this issue Ukraine is a buffer area”, - he said.

“The connection between the issues of the Black Fleet and gas prices prove that geopolitical interests of Russia lie within the Crimea peninsula… But they shouldn’t have mix economy with policy”, - he noted.

According to his words, “the former power, as well as a current power can’t negotiate in favor of Ukrainian interests”. “If someone can think that we have a stable situation in Crimea, than this person is greatly mistaken. In this case they could sign the agreement not for 25 years, but till 3046 or 3050”, - noted the former Head of the Secretariat.

Baloga underlined that “Russian fleet has no rapid-tactic or strategic significance within Black Sea”. “As to go through Bosporus and Dardanelles, they need a permission of NATO member-state, - Turkey. We perfectly realize that Turkey and NATO control the quantity of ships in Black Sea”, - he underlined.

“And location in Crimea and constant aggravation of hostility to everything Ukrainian… I think that it’s not Russian authorities who will tell in 10, 15 or 20 years which status should be given to Crimea, - said Baloga. – Everything will be prepared for the Crimea itself to show its will, the same as it was in Abkhazia and South Ossetia”, - noted former Head of the Secretariat.

“In the end, we observe a direct finlandization of Ukraine on the horizon. This is 1945, after the war, the same relations as the Soviet Union had with Finland. Now we have the same relations with Russia. Do we really need to get involved with it?”, - he claimed. “We are an independent state, possessing the right to integrate into global and European institutions. Why should we limit ourselves”, - asked Baloga.

As reported earlier, on April 21st in Kharkov in the result of the  meeting of the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Dmitry Medvedev and Viktor Yanukovich signed the treaty on the issues of Russian Black Sea Fleet location within the territory of the state for 25 years (till 2042) with the right to prolong for 5 years, provided no party claims the dissolution of the treaty.
