Turkmenistan intends to resolve dispute with Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea through International Court of Justice

The acting Minister of Oil and Gas and Mineral Resources of Turkmenistan, Kakageldi Abdyllaev, commented on the situation around Turkmenistan’s activities at Serdar field.

According to the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH), the Azerbaijani mass media have recently circulated statements by the Azerbaijani officials, including Minister of Industry and Energy of this country Natig Aliyev, presenting a one-sided view of the Azerbaijani side that does not describe the real situation on this issue.

“In 2008, during the visit by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Azerbaijan, the two countries did not sign any agreements. At the same time, Turkmenistan put forward specific initiatives to address the problem. Unfortunately, these initiatives have found no response from the Azerbaijani side.

Turkmenistan has repeatedly called on Azerbaijan to stop working in the areas of the sea with unclear jurisdiction, namely the fields of Omar and Osman. The activities carried out by AIOC consortium, including British Petroleum, Chevron, Exxon Mobile, Hess, Inpex, Itochu, Statoil, TPAO, SOCAR in the areas with uncertain jurisdiction contradict the international law. In an effort to hide their illegal actions in the disputed territories, the Azerbaijani side is trying to present itself as a rightful owner of the fields, while simultaneously violating the preliminary agreement reached earlier.

In this situation, Turkmenistan has no choice but to turn to the International Court of Justice.

The median line, which is determined in accordance with the principles and norms of international maritime law, but disputed by Azerbaijan, runs close to the meridian of 51 degrees 10 minutes east longitude. Therefore, Serdar field lies entirely in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea, and Turkmenistan has repeatedly informed the Azerbaijani side about this,” the acting Minister of Oil and gas and Mineral Resources said.

“The buzz stirred in the Azerbaijani media does not help strengthening the friendly relations between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, and the Turkmen side regrets it very much,” he concluded.
