Ukraine wants to diversify energy supply routes through partnership with Caspian states

The Ukrainian government is successfully implementing a program to improve the state's energy independence by diversifying the routes and sources of energy supplies and increasing domestic production. Ukraine sees the Caspian states as important partners for the diversification of energy supply routes and sources and the implementation of joint energy projects.

Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko said this at the Atlantic Council Energy and Economy Summit, which is taking place in Istanbul (Turkey) on November 15-16, the press service of the Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry told UKRINFORM.

"Ukraine has ambitious plans to achieve energy independence in the next decade. We are increasing our own production, mainly in the Black Sea region, attracting the latest technology, new drilling rigs, and we will continue this progress. In addition, the state launched a program for the extraction of shale gas, involving companies from the United States and Europe," Boiko said.

He also said that this month Ukraine will start implementing the LNG Terminal national project, which will open access for the state to the global market for liquefied natural gas and new opportunities for cooperation in the Black Sea-Caspian region.

"The construction of the terminal begins on November 26, and the work will be conducted quickly due to the use of the latest technology. It will be a floating plant, which will help significantly speed up the construction process and the receipt of gas," he said.

In addition, in 2011, Ukraine joined the European Energy Community and it wants to be an active participant in regional energy projects, including in the Trans-Anatolian natural gas pipeline (TANAP). "Ukraine is in talks with partners on its possible participation in the TANAP project. And we have convincing arguments, because almost all infrastructure facilities, from Turkey to our border, have already been completed. Moreover, Ukraine has gas storage facilities on the border with the European Union, which could be the basis for this future pipeline," the minister said.

Boiko also added that the transportation of Caspian energy resources to European market via reliable routes would promote stability, economic growth and security in the region. "Our partners from Azerbaijan and other countries bring new energy resources to Europe, and we are ready to participate in this process. The diversification of resources is important to Europe, which has already been demonstrated by liquefied gas that appeared on the European market at a lower price," Boiko said.

The Atlantic Council Energy and Economy Summit was attended by Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Poneman, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake, U.S. State Department's Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs Carlos Pascual, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar, former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, senior officials of the energy ministries of the Caspian countries, as well as representatives of the leading oil and gas companies.
