An opening ceremony of the International Year of Water Cooperation will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on February 11, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan.
UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova and Tajikistan's Ambassador to UNESCO Rustamjon Soliev discussed Tajikistan's participation in the ceremony at the end of last week.
“The views concerning Tajikistan's participation in the opening ceremony of the International Year of Water Cooperation to be held in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on February 11 and upcoming Dushanbe water conference under UN aegis were exchanged,” said the Foreign Ministry.
The UN General Assembly a resolution on the International Year of Water Cooperation in 2013, which was prepared and introduced by Tajikistan. The proposal to declare international year of water cooperation was firstly voiced by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in his address to the Fifth International Water Forum in Istanbul in March 2009.
The Tajik government organized a committee to prepare and implement International Water Cooperation campaign, Prime Minister of Tajikistan Akil Akilov held the first meeting of the committee two weeks ago.
Tajikistan's Ambassador Soliev told Irina Bokova about Tajikistan's efforts aimed at reasonable and efficient use of water resources. They also discussed bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan, its social and economic reconstruction.
The UNESCO Director General highly valued Tajikistan's role in peace establishment in Afghanistan and Tajik President's initiatives in sphere of efficient water usage,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The parties positively valued the process of bilateral cooperation development and they also reviewed prospective cooperation in spheres of education, science and culture.
