Legal amendments bolstering the power of the Turkmen parliament went into effect January 13 after being published in the government-run newspaper, Neutralny Turkmenistan.
Among the legislature's new powers is the authority to initiate and adopt laws, amend the constitution and call presidential elections. It will also enjoy expanded fiscal oversight authority, the power to ratify international treaties and the ability to confirm presidential nominations for such positions as Supreme Court chair, prosecutor-general, along with the justice and interior ministers, according to a report distributed by the Russian news agency.
The law covering parliament's expanded powers was adopted on January 9, during the opening session of the new legislature.
