The Valle de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills was a major site of sugar production in Cuba and was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1988. The peak of the sugar boom in Cuba was in the 1840's when Cuba was the world's leading producer of sugar. Sugar was not only exported to Europe but also used in Cuba for the production of rum.
